The History of Vernon Hills, Illinois
The area that would eventually become Vernon Hills began as a 200-acre farm back in 1851. The land remained as farmland for the next 100 years until part of it was purchased for a residential community and golf course. The Village of Vernon Hills began as an outgrowth of a small 125 house subdivision that was home to 123 people and was built by developers Quinn Hogan and Barney Loeb. Incorporated on July 16, 1958, the Village grew from a few hundred residents to 5,600 during its first two decades. At one time, the village was so small, both the village and the police department were run from a local motel! In 1971, the village trustees finally purchased two portable buildings out of which the village and the police could operate. By 1980, the census reported a total of 9,827 people living in Vernon Hills.
