The History of Lake Forest, Illinois
The roughly 17 square mile area now known as Lake Forest was once home to the Potawatomi Indians until they were displaced by European settlers in the early part of the 19th century. Lake Forest was incorporated as a city on 1861 by a charter granted by the Illinois State legislature. One of the most distinctive features of the fledging city that can still be seen today was the manner in which the city was planned, using the picturesque principles worked out for English gardens. The city’s architect, the landscape gardener Almerin Hotchkiss, used a plan that was intended to create the illusion of a city in a park. The plan called for streets to be laid out in an organic manner that takes into account such natural features as the ravines and lake bluffs, unlike the way in which many other cities were designed that effectively forced the streets into formal gridiron plan.
The secluded nature of Lake Forest was also intentional. The original settlors wanted an escape from the hustle and bustle of Chicago which, according to them, was full of immigrants “with their dangerous socialist ideas and sinful alcoholic libations.” For the next century, Lake Forest continued to serve as a middle to upper class suburb of it more well know neighbor. 1967, a group of 12 long-time residents of Lake Forest formed a land conservation organization known as the “Lake Forest Open Lands Association. Its express purpose was to purchase or otherwise set aside the rapidly disappearing open spaces in the city, in the interests of preserving animal habitat, restoring ecosystems, and providing environmental education for the city’s children. Over the next four decades the group managed to acquire over 700 acres within the city limits, which now form six nature preserves with 12 miles of walking trails open to the public. In addition, residents and visitors can see what the areas wetlands, woodlands and savanna looked like back in the days of the Potawatomi.
