The History of Glenview, Illinois
Like much of the surrounding area, the area on which the City of Glenview now occupies was once inhabited by the mound building Winnebago Indians. Other tribes also shared the area, notably the Potawatomi who settled in the area now known as Northfield Township. After the arrival of the Europeans to the “New World,” a succession of treaties, culminating in the Treaty of Chicago in 1833, caused the Native Americans to lose their land. In the years that followed, European settlers flooded the area. Early settlers were permitted to select 160 acres of land in the area now known and Niles and Maine Townships near the site of the present Glen View Club.
Over the next 50 years, the area continued to attract settlers. By the 1890s, it became apparent there was need for more services than the informal township organizations could provide. Residents of the area began advocating for a structured local government to respond to the growing needs of the community. A referendum to incorporate as a village was held in 1898. The initial effort was defeated; however, on June 17, 1899, a second attempt was made and, by a vote of 59 to 51, the decision was made to form a village from Section 34 and most of Section 35 of Northfield Township. At the time of incorporation, the village had an estimated 361 residents. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Glenview remained predominantly farmland; however, after World War II, developers began to give the village a more suburban appearance.

Located north of downtown Chicago, Illinois, the Village of Glenview is part of the affluent North Shore. Covering approximately 14 square miles, Glenview had a population of just over 44,000 residents at the time of the 2010 Census.
The magazine Business Insider has recognized Glenview’s schools for their exceptional public education on several occasions. In 2014, Business Insider ranked Glenview’s Glenbrook South High School as the 19th best public high school in the United States. In 2015, Glenbrook School District 225 was also ranked 2nd in the state only behind its neighbor New Trier Township, and 10th in the nation by Business Insider.
Residents and visitors alike can take advantage of the numerous outdoor activities in Glenview, such as two outdoor pools (Flick Park and Roosevelt Park), the Glenview Ice Center, and two golf courses (Glenview National 9 Golf Club and Glenview Park Golf Club) as well as the Glenview Tennis Club, Wagner Farm, and the Grove National Historic Landmark. In addition, Glenview residents can enjoy the Kent Fuller Air Station Prairie & Evelyn Pease Tyner Interpretive Center, the Park Center, and outdoor skating and sledding during the winter months.
